Why use ACV?

Marvin's mom asked me about apple cider vinegar (ACV) and why give it to our dogs. As with many therapies, supplements, and holistic approaches to the care of our dogs, there will be varying opinions about the use of different things. I had never heard of adding ACV to the dogs' water until Willow and Echo's breeder suggested it. Not long after that, I started seeing comments about it on some of the dog forums I belong to.

So what are the benefits? It is known to reduce common infections, skin problems, increase resistence to disease, prevent muscle fatigue after exercise, and it normalizes the acid production in the digestive tract. You'll find many other benefits of ACV listed when reading about it on the internet! When buying ACV, buy the organic variety to get the benefit of naturally occurring enzymes. It helps to give the immune system an overall boost.

There are many resources and link on the internet that talk about ACV and dogs. Recommended amounts in relationship to the dogs' weight can also be found easily on some of these pages.

I can't swear by the ACV.....all I can say is that since adding it to the dogs' water along with a regimen of other supplements for Kai, he has hung in there for 1.5, almost 2 years since he first displayed signs of the debilitating orthopedic problems he has. That's enough evidence for me to keep giving it to the dogs!

Hey Zoo crew- can I ask about what kind of ortho problems Kai has? I belong to a group called Orthodogs and was thinking of sharing this suggestion with the group. Is there something specific about his problem that you think the ACV has helped or just that he has been more resilliant due to the general health benefits of ACV? Thanks!

My mom's grandmom made my mom drink it as a way to lose weight when she was young. Interesting that it might help doggies. We are moving slowly to organic and holistic.

Glad to hear your dad is ok!

ACV sure has lots of benefits. LS takes it too. Sometimes she adds it into my drinking water but I guess I don't really fancy it.

Sounds interesting. I will have to do some reading up on it. I would like to know if it helps in preventing doxie back problems.

We have used it too. For all breeds. For: Ph of the urine,(very helpful for those prone to bladder trouble) fleas(with garlic powder),overall health ie immune system. Lots of people use it too. We put it on the food-unless you have a picky eater it's ok. Also, it can be used topically for itchy spots. Remember people using it for the pain of sunburn? Works on dogs too.
LOTS of good stuff and what they do not utilize they pee out with no danger to them!
Mom had a Blue dane that was prone to skin trouble(that dilute factor) The ACV was used inside and outside on his skin.
Loved your ornaments and we will keep Halo in our prayers!
Whew-
Oh, THANK YOU for your great Christmas Card. Mom is so sorry her accident happened at this time of year.
Hugs

I've heard about giving the ACV to dogs for stomached acid and skin issues. I've never known anybody that did it though. That's cool that it seems to be helping Kai.

What excellent information! I'm going to tell Roomie, and I know she'll research the heck out of it! Lexi (one of her Min Pins) has terrible allergies, and if taking ACV will help (and if it will help her hot spots, too), then we'll be doing it soon, too!

I'm so sorry about your dad & sister. I will be praying for you all. I wish I could give you a hug.
I'm having one of those weeks, where I wish I could just drop off the face of the earth, if only for an hour to regroup & pull myself together. I broke my wrist in 2 places and have to deal with that & the major amount of snow we have been getting. It is so cold here & just yesterday I found out that my daughters surgery wasn't successful & she will need a cornea transplant in the new year.
